Let us introduce you to our marathon Runners

Running a marathon seems pretty crazy to most of us but this year at Cardens we have 2 members of staff braving it. The Brighton marathon is a distance of 42.195 km or 26 miles and 385 yards. The marathon takes places every April in Brighton along the south coast. We’ve set up a short question and answer section where you can find out more about the runners and why they are running this year.

Tell us more about why you want to run a marathon and how you got involved?

 

I ran my first marathon in 2012 when my dad sadly passed away from illness resulting from diabetes. I ran this marathon to raise money for diabetes UK, crossing the finish line in around 4 ½ hours made up for the injuries and the pain that I incurred in training! It didn’t stop there I could barely move for days afterwards! Despite knowing exactly what I am letting myself in for I have committed myself to doing it all again. This time I would like to beat my time from last year – although just crossing the finishing line is an achievement!

 

How are you preparing for it?

 

Running 26.2 miles is a big thing, I know that for sure! I am training as much as I can without injury – Giving up my lie ins – I am up with the birds on a Saturday morning to fit in my long run – currently up to 13 miles, and with just two rest days a week, most evenings and some lunch breaks I am training. I am basically fitting in training into every spare minute I can! I will also be following a nutritional plan to ensure that I am doing the most I can to push my body to train and run such distances!

 
What mental theme tune will be playing as you cross over the finish line?

 

Throughout the race I will be listening to as much upbeat music as possible to keep me moving! By the time I cross the finish line my only focus will be moving my legs and listening to the cheers of support in the crowd!

 

What charity/cause are you running for?

 

Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH)

 

Why did you choose this organization?

 

This time I have decided to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital – who provide inspirational and world class care to hundreds of children every day. I don’t have children, but plenty of friends do – if they fell sick I would want to know that both the children and their families receive the best support and treatment to help the little ones get better Great Ormond Street can do this with our help. Reading what children and their parents can go through when they are ill is very upsetting, they can feel so helpless so I want to do what I can that can help them in anyway.

Tell us more about why you want to run a marathon and how you got involved?

 

I’ve always wanted to do a marathon to tick it off the bucket list and also to test my physical and mental strength to its limits.
I got involved after my friend and I started running during the week to maintain fitness during the football offseason and then spontaneously decided we would both run the marathon (ingenious idea).

 
How are you preparing for it?

 

I’ve been training for the marathon since October and have amassed over 170 miles so far which has been a struggle as I have picked up a few injuries in the process, but this all part of the training process, I tend to run 5 times a week, with three 6-8 mile runs, one short run for pace and finish with a long distance run on a Sunday, at present this is 14 miles and I will increase this up to 20 miles 3 weeks before the marathon and then taper off to ensure I do not get injuries.

What charity/cause are you running for?

 

I am running for the Chestnut Tree House (Children’s hospice Care)

 
Why did you choose this organization?

 

I have been donating personally to this Charity for nearly a year now as it is a local charity where you can really see the passion and dedication of the hospice and everyone associated with it.
This charity gives children with life-limiting conditions the opportunity to live a little and get the best out of life they can. They do this all with a shoe string budget with the hospice needing nearly £3 million per year to run with the families never charged for their care with less that 8p in every pound is government funded, which is truly shameful and thus they rely on the generosity of people like us. Anything I can raise will make a difference to these children and for me that’s enough. But please don’t donate just for my cause, donate as often as you can, it genuinely will mean the world to me and everyone involved with Chestnut.
